(MB) Rio Tinto’s share of aluminium production fell 3% year on year and was flat quarter on quarter at 887,000 tonnes in the fourth quarter of 2017, the company announced on Tuesday January 16. The annual decline comes amid lower production at the Boyne smelter in Australia as well as at the non-managed Sohar smelter in Oman following a power interruption incident in the third quarter of last year. Last year, the Boyne smelter extended its production cut to 14% from 8% due to high power prices. Rio Tinto has a 59.4% stake in the smelter.
